zanzibar/Indian ocean
A fascinating island, Zanzibar, also known as Ungia, is the most exotic place I have been. One of the Spice Islands, it is a muslim nation with historic Stonetown (Unesco World Heritage site) showing Swahili, Indian, Arab and European influence. It was a major slave trading Indian ocean port, with many reminders of that past.

Pohkara, Nepal
Nepal has as much potential for people portraits as anyplace I have visited. In this case western Nepal is where this photo was taken in 1978.
KATMANDU, NEPAL, 1978
Katmandu has one of the most lively street photography venues anywhere. (“The People of Nepal” , article and photos by Terry Hull. Published in Pentax Family Magazine, Tokyo, 1979,) Required reading before visiting Nepal? “Lost Horizons” by James Hilton, or check out a 1937 movie starring Ronald Colman, based on the book. Song “Katmandu” by Bob Seger

Indian Women
This image is now 38 years old. The notes from those days are gone, hence I am thinking this may well have been taken in Nepal. Either country remains a people photographer paradise.
Nagano, Japan
Nagano Prefecture is a lovely part of Japan famous for hosting Winter Olympics. This street portrait was taken in Kiso Fukushima, one of the prettiest towns in Japan I was able to visit.
Hibya Park Tokyo
Near the famous Frank Lloyd Wright designed Imperial Hotel sits Hibya Park. Its a great place to photograph Japanese children playing. This was taken in the late 1970’s
Thailand
The White Karen tribe is one of the ethnic minority tribes in Northern Thailand. The main city of northern Thailand is Chang Tai-Meaning “new city.” It was founded near the end of the 13th century. As I recall this picture was taken in Chiang Mai province, but can’t be sure. I also took a hair raising jeepney ride through flooded mountains requiring chains on the tires to reach a Hmong village.
Untitled
My mind has failed me, but this image portrait could have been taken in Viet Nam central Highland during the Viet Nam War. My uncertainty persists. Could have been China.
India
India is near the top of my list for travel photography. Certainly within the top five, along with México, Nepal, Japan and the US. I often dream of receiving a grant to photograph India for a prolonged period. I would start my fantasy assignment by rereading the book Freedom at Midnight. A book dealing with the 1947 partition administered by Lord Mountbatten as the British were withdrawing from India. Maybe then one of MM Kaye books-Shadow of the Moon?
Beijing
1977
Hard to imagine but in 1977 most Chinese people had never seen foreigners. When our small tourist vehicle would stop, inquisitive crowds would quickly gather. This photograph is an example.
An Khe, South VietNam
This small market town was on the outskirts of the First Air Cavalry Division. Many of the market perishables were beyond my Wisconsin farming knowledge (1968)

This group portrait has historical interest for me for two reasons. This home for the elderly received us with applause, and the woman in the center who had her feet bound for esthetic reasons early in life. In times gone by small feet were considered a sign of beauty.
